If you must leave the loader "up" to clear the snowblower, it will be necessary to hold it up some way. If you just leave it up, it will eventually drift down onto the snowblower. This is normal for all loaders due to internal leakage in the cylinders and valves. If you notice loaders being displayed with the boom raised at trade shows, fairs, or on dealer lots, there will be "locks" installed on each extended boom cylinder to prevent accidental dropping of the boom. They are usually simple metal channels that are placed over the extended rods and secured in place with "quick-release" pins that "capture" the rod. You can have these fabricated or maybe do it yourself. The only thing you have to decide is how high you want the loader to be to clear your blower. Then measure the lengths of the exposed rods for this elevation and make the channels that long. You also will have to determine how "deep" to make the channels to provide for the holes for the quick-release pins. The width of the insides of the channels is just slightly larger than the diameter of the cylinder rods. Good Luck and Be Safe.

I had the JD kit installed on my 955. The price for the kit was close to what you quote. On the 55 series tractors it is necessary to install a bypass plug in the hydraulic cylinder that controls the rockshaft. This requires removal of the seat, rear sheet metal under the seat, control linkages, valve cover, etc. There were 9 pages of instruction sheets accompanying the kit. Instead of doing it myself, II felt it worth the money to have the dealer install it since it was something the service department had been doing for years.

Roger....SCV is the acronym for Selective Control Valve. It could be either a basic valve or one with float. The term "SCV" is ofen used by manufacturers of agricultural tractors when referring to the hydraulic controls for implements or attachments.

As you guessed, the detent position on the bucket control of the joystick does initiate a regenerative circuit on JD loaders. It is built into the Dual Selective Control Valve mounted on the tractor and operates just as you described.

The term "lateral float" used by JD is somewhat misleading. The vertical slots in the lift links of the 3 PH actually provide "torsional or rotational float" of the implement with respect to the tractor. This is to allow the implement to follow ground contours independent of the roll of the tractor. Lateral motion of the hitch with respect to the tractor is really controlled by the adjustable check chains (or on some tractors there are adjustable bars). When using a box blade or utility blade, I get the best results with the "lateral float" enabled.

I have a JD 955 with a JD 59 inch front mounted snowblower. It also fits the 855. This past December we had over 31 inches of snow (a record for any month here), and I really appreciated having the blower. No problems at all in moving the snow. The hydraulic chute rotation is very handy in placing the snow just where you want it. My only problem is that I blew some pea gravel from the edge of the road into the lawn. Will have to rake it out by hand this spring. Even so that is a small price to pay for the speed and ease of clearing deep snow.

I have a JD 420 loader, and I echo the preceeding positive comments on: (1) ease of mounting and dismounting, (2) quick-change bucket / pallet forks / front blade (all JD), and (3) compatability with mid-mount mower deck. Each time I mow I drop off the loader and then remount it as soon as I am done. This way my loader is always stored inside with the tractor. I don't have enough room to just park the loader inside by itself.

There is a discussion underway here about how a "subsoiler" or "ripper" is constructed. One of the sponsors of this board is Monroe Tuff-Line and there is an ad on the board (at least in the Chat section) showing 3 of the "subsoilers" they offer. The smaller one or 2 shank units could be pulled by compact tractors in many soil conditions. It might require more than one pass with the second being at an angle to the first, but it can be done.

Cutter, Check out the Curtis Website www.curtiscab.com. You can see the loader blades there. It does not appear that any welding is required to attach to most loaders. The spec pages show you can get them for loaders with standard or quick-attach buckets. The differences in price quotes from your 2 dealers may be a result of differenct specs such as blade width and optional hydraulic blade angling. I have a similar 6 foot John Deere blade for Model 420 loader. It listed for $1200 with manual angling. Works great.

Doug, The dimensions you asked for as measured from the center of the ball joint on the tractor towards the rear are approximately: 7 inches, 8 inches, 12 inches, and 13 1/2 inches. There was a Kit available to convert to the High Capacity Hitch (BM18186 with a list price of $340). It may still be available.

Cutter, You say the "capacity" is 7.5 gallons. Is that the amount required to do a standard oil change or the total amount the factory would install when the tractor is built plus filling all the hoses and cylinders of attachments at the dealership? The amount of oil required for initial fill is larger of course and you don't want it to be substantially larger. If it is, then you might want to try to at least drain as many hydraulic cylinders as practical.

Like you I also made my own lawn vac trailer and then purchased the vacuum unit separately. Both Blue-Bird International and Trac-Vac make suitable units. These are designed to be mounted rigidly onto the rear of the tractor. I just discarded the tractor mounting frame and used the vacuum plus 8 hp engine and hoses to mount on my trailer. You also have to purchase the connector boot for your specific mower deck separately. I have done this with both Trac-Vac and Blue-Bird units with no problem. You only have to fabricate the mounting frame for your trailer. These units can be seen on the websites www.trac-vac.com and www.bluebirdinternational.com.

Two attachments specifically tailored to tractor models made by the OEMs are loaders and mid-mount mowers. Today there is an emphasis on ease of attachment and detachment of both units. If you anticipate long-term ownership of your new tractor, make sure you get the original equipment loader and deck (if you have any need at all) before they are replaced with newer models which may not fit your tractor. Even though there may be aftermarket loaders and decks available for an extended period of time, they seldom have the ease of attachment and detachment features found on OEM equipment.

Chris, I have owned vacuums made by Trac-Vac (www.trac-vac.com) and EZ Vac (www.bluebirdintl.com) and both have served me well. Each was an 8 hp unit. I had them mounted on my on special trailer. I am now using the Bluebird Chipper-Vac because it has a built-in shredder (like a small hammer-mill) so that all materials are reduced in size. I don't think you can go wrong with either unit.

Paul, PTO implements such as a rotary cutter are designed to be operated at the engine speed that produces 540 rpm at the PTO. This provides the highest blade tip speed for the cleanest cut. The engine speed for PTO operation is usually marked on the tach or you can look it up in the operators manual. To estimate acres per hour you need to estimate forward travel speed based on the gear or hydro position you can operate safely and comfortably. Then just multiply it out based on nominal cutting width (not full width) and then take about 75-80% of that to account for turns and other field efficiency losses. One way to estimate ground travel speed with a hydro is to clock the time it requires to drive a measured distance (say 400 feet) while you are mowing and then calculate the ground speed from distance and time.
